artificial blood: a reality?

We had already talked about in this blog. The research is moving to be able to get a source of artificial blood, thereby eliminating the need for donations , and permanently eliminating this also risks associated with transfusions of infected blood.

Compared to what is happening in the United Kingdom (see here our last published article, and here an update from the Sunday Times ), in the United States , thanks to funding from the Pentagon , we would much closer to a final result .

The technique, developed by Arteriocyte , it would be ready: make it possible to obtain stem cells from taken from umbilical cord blood indistinguishable from that taken by man. Currently the cost to produce one unit would be $ 5,000 , but when the process should become industrial, could be reduced to only $ 1,000.

The request to begin human trials protocol was presented to the Food & Drug Administration in July. The first tests on humans could begin in 2013 .
